Materials
Box containing twenty-two colour tablets, two each of the following colours: blue, red, yellow, orange, green, purple pink, grey, brown, white, black.
Preparation
This is an individual exercise, which may be done on a neutral coloured mat on the table (Note: work cycle to be observed)
Presentation
- The Directress first shows the child how to carry the box of colour tablets to the table, holding with both hands.
- The Directress sits beside the child and places the box of tablets in front of the child. Directress shows how to take the colour tablets out from the box by holding them at the edge with 3 fingers: the thumb on one edge and the 2nd. and 3rd. finger on the other edge without touching the coloured part of the tablet.
- All the tablets are removed from the box and placed on the table mat at random.
- Then the Directress starts matching the colour tablets into pairs, starting with the three primary colours - blue, red and yellow. Directress then invites the child to pair the rest of the colour tablets.
- Directress then uses the Three Period Lessons to introduce the names of the colour tablets. Revise the lesson with the three primary colours and then introduce one new colour with two from the previous lesson at a time.

Points Of Interest
The colour tablets should be held between the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger. this is in direct preparation for holding a pencil.
During art session, may allow the child to experiment with the colours and observe the results of mixing colours.
Purpose
- Develop the child's visual perception on colour.
- Teach the child the names of the colours.
- Give the child experience in matching.
- Develop the child's fine motor control.
- Prepare the child, indirectly, for controlling a pencil.
Variation
Using Colour Box 2, place one of the pair of each colour tablets on a table at one end of the room and the other matching tablets on a table to the other end of the room. With a group of children show one child a colour tablet and ask him to go to the other table and fetch the matching tablet. The child has to remember the colour.
